Eyes of the Docks Exhibition

In November 2006 Boomerang Productions Ltd launched ‘Eyes of the Docks' a unique and innovative international multi-media art installation. 9 international artists gave their responses and interpretations to the history and the way of life of the men who worked on the docks in Cork , Liverpool , Belfast and New York . The artists worked in numerous mediums which included large scale prints, sound installations and DVD projections across a huge warehouse in the Port of Cork . A high quality book was also produced featuring commentary from the artists, stories of the dockers, newspaper articles and images of the project and the people and places that inspired it.

This was and is a chance to learn about and experience a part of a culture and way of life that is fading away and dying out, despite being one of the cornerstones of any modern civilization. The project was based around the historic bonded warehouses on Custom Quay in Cork’s Docklands. The building was used as if it were the centrefold of a book. Using print, projection, sound, computer graphics and other media, including a working transport belt and coal reservoir, the artists came together to tell the fascinating stories of the men who were at the heart of the Irish economy for centuries.

This was a one-of-a-kind opportunity for the public to enter a different world, to travel back in time and to see, hear and feel the atmosphere and experience the artistic response to the social history of the Docklands.

‘Eyes of the Docks’ ran from Thursday November 30th until Sunday December10th 2006. The exhibition was hugely successful and received extensive media coverage on a local and national scale. It was invited back to Cork for two weeks as part of the Mid Summer Festival 2007. As a result ‘Eyes of the Docks' will tour to Belfast , Amsterdam , Rotterdam and Liverpool . The artists included Hani Alqam from Jordan, Raed Ibrahim from the Lebanon, Ruud Lanfermeijer and Remko Van Dokkum from the Netherlands, Marcel Wierckx from Canada and Sally Maidment, Charlotte Donovan, Jill McKeown from Ireland.
