The Community and Enterprise Directorate is primarily concerned with the integration of local public services in order to improve the effectiveness of public service delivery, the avoidance of duplication and the identification of service gaps. Of particular concern is responsiveness to local needs and increased participation by local communities and other stakeholders in policy formulation.
The main instrument to achieve this is a univied vision at local level that embraces the plans of the various public service providers. This Integrated Strategy for the Economic, Social and Cultural Development of Cork City provides the unified vision.
Project Re-Focus
Project Re-Focus is a Youth Employment Programme which was developed through the Knocknaheeny RAPID Programme and has been extended to other parts of the City. The programme includes a 3 year commitment to the young people who participate in the programme to provide them with skills training, personal development and other necessary supports which will ultimately lead them into mainstream training and education or employment. The programme has been very successful to date with 120 young people who would be at risk of long-term unemployment participating in the course.
Comhairle na nÓg is the City’s Youth Council. It provides a forum for young peoples’ issues to be addressed. Comhairle na nÓg is supported by the Office of the Minister for Children.
The Cork City Comhairle na nÓg was established in 2000 through the convening of annual general meetings each November. Since 2008 a permanent group of young people between the ages of 12 and 18 years of age has been meeting regularly. The agenda is set by the young people themselves and has addressed a number of issues including bullying in schools and mental health.
