Community Development

The Directorate prepared a Community Development Strategy in 2004. This strategy seeks to create a shared understanding of what “Community Development” means and the role of the City Council in delivering this service locally. Elected members and officials of the City Council, public agencies and local community organisations participated in the preparation of the strategy.

The strategy clearly defines Cork City Council’s activities in Community Development and how it can best improve the quality of life of the city’s residents.

About The Awards

The Lord Mayor’s Community and Voluntary Awards 2010 were launched in The City Hall on Friday 26th February and the Award Ceremony took place on 7th April 2010. The purpose of the scheme is to acknowledge groups which, through their commitment to voluntary and community activities, have played a significant role in enhancing the quality of life of their communities.

Growing demand on people’s time has made it increasingly difficult to attract and retain volunteers. However, these groups continue to work in a hugely diverse range of areas; from caring for the elderly to arranging cultural events; organising youth groups to supporting residents associations and a host of other community activities. The awards recognise the contribution of these groups to the social and cultural life of Cork City.

The Award scheme, which is sponsored by The Evening Echo and Express Kitchens and Floors has a total prize fund of €9,000, and is open to all groups in Cork City and anyone living in Cork City is eligible to nominate a group or the group may nominate itself.
